Job Summary:
The College Counselor is responsible for providing comprehensive guidance and support to high school students in their college application process. This role involves assisting students in selecting appropriate colleges and universities, advising on course selection, and facilitating the application and financial aid processes. The College Counselor will work closely with students, parents, teachers, and college admissions officers to ensure students are prepared for the transition from high school to higher education.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Provide individual counseling to students to assess their academic strengths, interests, and career goals.
2. Assist students in identifying suitable colleges and universities based on their academic performance, personal preferences, and career aspirations.
3. Guide students in understanding admission requirements, application deadlines, and financial aid options.
4. Support students in developing and refining their college application materials, including essays, resumes, and recommendation letters.
5. Organize and conduct college fairs, information sessions, and workshops to educate students and parents on college-related topics.
6. Facilitate college visits and coordinate meetings with college representatives.
7. Collaborate with high school teachers to provide academic advising and ensure students meet college admission requirements.
8. Stay up to date with current trends and changes in college admissions processes, financial aid policies, and scholarship opportunities.
9. Maintain accurate records of student progress, including college applications, acceptances, and scholarships awarded.
10. Foster relationships with college admissions officers to advocate for students and gather information regarding admission criteria and scholarship opportunities.
11. Act as a liaison between students, parents, and college admissions offices to address any concerns or questions that may arise during the application process.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
2. Previous experience working as a college counselor or in a related field.
3. In-depth knowledge of college admissions processes, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities.
4. Familiarity with various college entrance exams (SAT, ACT, etc.) and test preparation resources.
5. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport and establish positive relationships with students, parents, and college representatives.
6. Strong organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
7. Ethical and professional conduct, maintaining confidentiality and sensitivity when dealing with student information.
8. Proficient in using computer software and online resources relevant to college counseling.
9. Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of college counseling.
10. Ability to work effectively as part of a team and collaborate with school staff and administration.
